Poor Guides

Dictionary entry for the word review says it means the following:
  • critical article or report
  • general survey of something
  • inspection or examination by viewing
  • formal inspection
Review comes from the French past participle revoir - to see again. To review is to look at again, to look back at, or to reflect on.

Amazon reviews are designed to help and provide feedback for guidance on buying decisions to potential buyers. Yet on Amazon reviews, ya sometimes get inane and totally useless feedback such as:

"Does what is says on the box/tin". 

These idiots watch too many adverts.

"Great delivery service." 


Yeah right. I need to know Amazon's delivery service is great. 

Some are almost as good as:

"The package was undamaged when delivered."

And???

Almost as irrelevant as the weather the day the package was sent. Unless there was a problem or you are doing a comprehensive, all-inclusive review - Pros / Cons. For / Against. Good / Bad.


"Just received it and everything was in the box."


Yeah, right. Climb the heights. 

How should a review stack up?

Reviews on Amazon should be loosely based on:


1. Delivery

Amazon has a great delivery service. They worked this stuff out a long time ago. They have long standing agreements with delivery companies. Don't bother mentioning delivery from Amazon unless there was a problem.

If you bought a product from Amazon Market Place (vendors selling on Amazon's site), then make a point of mentioning the delivery problem you experienced AND how the company responded. Did they acknowledge the issue? Did they resolve the issue? Did they deal with the issue? Tell us more.

2. Product 

Most times the product is as described. Sometimes its difficult to get what the product is like from description and photos.

Was the item you purchased as described? Why not?

Was the product what you ordered. Was the product the right color size, fit? If not, state that in your feed back. If the product was as described, it goes without saying you don't need to mention it. Aside from maybe a good or excellent product, if you are really happy.

Inane remarks such as "it does what it says on the box" are totally pointless. It says on the box the product is toxic and should not be consumed. Did you consume the product to ensure it really was toxic and actually "did as it says on the box?" Guess not. Idiots abound.

Really, if you have nothing to say. Say nothing. Don't try to fill the void with content. Its unnecessary. The void is okay being empty.

3. Service
Sometimes the product or service is not as expected or described. You need to contact the company to resolve your issue. 

Did you contact the company via amazon email complaints system? What did the company say or do? Share your experience. Let others know. Was it good? Was it poor?

I bought several second user books on Amazon market place recently, most were fine. One of the books was not up to spec. Not as described. I emailed the company. They sent a replacement free of charge. The replacement book I received was brand new. I did not pay additional postage.

That's excellent service. The kinda service I want to share. Let others know about. Disseminate. Why?  If you bought stuff from a rogue supplier, its a poor experience. Something to avoid. You want to buy from suppliers that provide a good, better, or excellent service. If we buy from these suppliers, they will continue to exist in business. That helps us. We get good product and good service. Rogue traders will cease to exist.


A few years back I bought a few hard disk on ebay. The second user hard disks did not work. The suppliers did not bother to respond. I buy little on ebay. 


I buy on Amazon cos they're customer support is excellent. Their prices not quite so good.


4. Cost

Was the product as priced. Was it good value? 

Most reviews tend not to mention price/cost. Unquestionably accepting price paid. 


Using google you can locate many products sold on Amazon, can be purchased for less. Amazon will not tell ya this.


Generally, when looking at suppliers, whether its Amazon, Ebay, or any other online supplier, I always read negative feedback first. Dig out all the negatives to see how the supplier rectifies the problem. That's a guide to whether I buy or not. 

5. Utilization
How was the product for you? Did it help? Was it useful? How did it impact on your life? What research did ya do before hand? Did the product/service align with/enhance your life at all? In what way? Did you find useful? Would others find it useful? If yes... why? 

Essentially did it help you? yes/no. 
Could it help others like you? yes/no.

Unfortunately one of the major drawbacks of the Amazon feedback system, is you cannot regulate or assess the ability of the individual/s providing feedback.

How do you "judge the judge?"
How do you "assess the assessor"?

The best you can do is draw conclusions from their text, assessment, and review. From that you judge them. Based on the judgement, you decide to buy or not to buy.
